Why I'm happy to turn 23 (getting older is great)

Saturday, 25 October 2014

Today I'd thought I'd post something a little different, with less nail varnish and makeup, and more Rebecca Kate.  I really wanted to talk about why I think getting older should be embraced. Especially as it's my birthday at the end of this month. A big happy birthday to my twin sister if you're reading this!

(Pulling off the tartan and chunky knits all the way back in the early 90s!)

A lot of my friends, and even myself in the past have moaned about getting older (yes, before you mention it - I know 23 is not old at all!), but the past few years from about the age of 18, gaining an extra year seems to be something a lot of people I know shy away from.

In the past two years or so my life has changed a lot, I've gone from graduating, to getting a full-time job, and full-circle back to uni again. Looking back I've definitely grown up, and it's really not a bad thing. I still have fun, go out and make new friends, and be a bit silly every now and again. Yet, I still cry sometimes when things get a bit much, and some days I do just need my Mum. I still can't fold a fitted sheet.

But, and here's the good part, It's all ok! I'm comfortable in my own skin. I know what clothes I like and what suits me. I've stopped caring quite as much about having new, trendy items in my wardrobe. I am happy with myself and who I am. I care less and less each day about what other people think.

The older I get, the happier I feel within myself. Anyone else out there who feels awkward sometimes, or doesn't like aspects about themselves, then please believe me when I say, it gets easier and easier as every birthday comes and goes.

So lets embrace getting older, and growing up, it really isn't bad at all. I'm not even upset I can't sing along to Taylor Swift's 22 any more, because frankly, I think being 23 is going to be way better.
